In Denver, Colorado, renting a small dumpster is one of the most economical ways of disposing of excess home or remodeling trash. For the most part, the process can be quick and simple, but a few tips may help you avoid some of the potential pitfalls.
A number 1–800 or online companies own no containers or trucks, but merely work as middlemen in the dumpster ordering process. They use cleverly constructed websites to lure in your order at a grossly inflated price and then farm out the job to a local Denver dumpster rental company, which could have provided a container for much less. Most of these middlemen “brokers” are located out of state and in some cases are not even based in the U.S. Rule of Thumb: Always use a local company to avoid the out of state “middleman”.
A number of companies, including a few in the Denver area, deliver dumpsters that are substantially smaller than they advertise. Cubic yards are the measurement units used to determine the actual volume of a roll-off container, and some providers will fudge these numbers by 10% or more. One should not be afraid to ask their provider for the exact volume of the dumpster they are renting. A customer receiving a roll-off that is 10% shy in volume is similar to someone paying for 10 gallons of gas but receiving only 9. Not a place one would shop again.
Sam’s provides inside and outside measurements as well as volume information for each of our dumpster sizes, available on our Containers page.
When receiving a quote for roll-off service, be sure to ask for the total price. Sam’s price quotes are, and have always included, delivery, pick up and disposal fees. We do not use fuel surcharges. The only time a Sam’s dumpster can incur additional charges is when it is overweight, contains hazardous materials, or goes beyond the scheduled time period.
Vast amounts of information, and misinformation, are finding their way onto the internet. Some roll-off companies are paying out of town online marketers to “pre screen, pre select and recommend them” based on, well, who knows? The marketers are being paid so they’ll say just about anything. Other dumpster rental companies have taken to writing themselves, or having their friend write flowery reviews. Only careful research on the part of each customer can ensure a dumpster choice that suits their needs.
Checking with the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start. Sam’s Hauling is a BBB accredited business with an A+ rating.
The newest concept introduced to the trash removal marketplace is the poly/canvas type bag that is purchased from area home improvement stores. The bags are typically not reused, not recycled and are not biodegradable, and while suitable for some small jobs, the awkward nature of filling these containers reminds one of trying to stuff leaves into a garbage bag. If you’re a Do-It-Yourselfer, you most likely want to spend your time working on your project rather than on how to make use of your plastic bag dumpster. Many metro areas, including Denver, have small metal short-term dumpsters that offer better utility and cost. Sam’s has delivered a number roll-offs to customers that have become frustrated with their bag’s shortcomings.
When someone does an internet search for dumpster rental services in the Denver area, results often show companies that are junk loader/haulers. These companies don’t have any dumpsters but are nationwide junk removal firms trying to tempt people into letting them load the trash and haul it away. What they don’t tell you is the price for this service is typically more than double the rate of a comparably sized dumpster. While some people may require loading assistance, they should be made aware of the price differential. Paying the high school kid down the block $20 to help you sort and load your trash may be a much cheaper alternative if you require assistance.
